Judo ranks are global titles (Rokyu, Gokyu, Yonkyu, etc.) not specific colors. Depending on what country you're visiting you may be asked to wear a different color to represent your specific rank. For example a Yonkyu in the USA my wear a different color than a Yonkyu in Korea but the rank and title are the same. Those with experience in BJJ can opt to take a rank validation exam. BJJ White / Blue = No Validation available BJJ Purple = up to Yonkyu BJJ Brown = up to Sankyu BJJ Black = up to Nikyu In our experience it is not the newaza (mat techniques) nor the tachiwaza (standing techniques) that challenge BJJ practitioners. When interviewed, students almost always point to the Japaneses vocab, rules, and history section as their biggest struggle and commonly site the need to create flashcards to get past the test. Yes. Annually the two (2) major Kosen events happen with one in the Spring in Las Vegas NV: Kosen Shoshinkan Tournament; typically in March. & one in Fall in Harrisburg PA: Kosen Nationals; typically in November.

Judo's focus is highly on throwing (the takedown) and specifically throwing the partner / opponent onto their back. Simply stated; the focus is on the big Ippon throw. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu's focus is highly on controlling positions on the ground and finding submissions thru that positional control. Simply stated; the focus is on grappling control. Kosen's focus is highly on the creating and maintaining control from the standing position and into the ground grappling position. Simply stated; the focus is on the transitional game.
